The Great Bath Road
A lecture by Julian Hunt
Tuesday, 29th October
Liston Hall, Chapel Street, SL7 1DD
Members £3.00, visitors £4.50
Marlow is very close to one of the great arterial roads of England. Julian Hunt became fascinated with the Bath Road when helping a local history group in Colnbrook. It took three days to get from London to Bath in the 18th century, with a change of horses every 12-15 miles. Each coach proprietor had contracts with innkeepers who supplied horses. The innkeepers not only employed cooks and maids to look after travellers, but needed an army of ostlers and grooms to ensure that fresh horses were available, day and night.
